Better Than Milk Rice Beverage Mix — A great alternative for those living dairy free!
A good friend of mine, also a celiac, recommended this great product to me. She has been using this as an alternative for milk since finding out her son needs to be dairy free as well as gluten free. Intrigued by the possibilities with this product, I had to give it a try.
Panos Brands kindly sent me samples of their Better Than Rice Milk Original and Vanilla flavors to test in my recipes for current and future cookbooks and product development. The product comes in powder form. It can be used as a milk replacement for any recipe calling for instant powdered milk. You can also use it according to package instructions to make milk. The package has suggestions on the label and the more mix you add, the richer the flavor.
I tried this product in my recipes in the dry form as well as the liquid form. When I first opened the package, instantly my senses were awakened by the fresh sweet aroma. I couldn’t taste the difference from using regular rice milk. I like that my customers can use it in my Semi-Condensed Cream Soup Mix too. We especially enjoyed using the vanilla flavored milk in our fruit smoothies. I recommend using the vanilla mix to add extra flavor to your favorite muffin recipes.
Gluten Free Mama’s February’s newsletter has a great recipe for old fashioned white bread using the bread machine. Mix 3 Tbsp. of the Original Mix with 1 1/4 cup water and use in place of the milk in this bread. You will love the flavor and texture of this bread. All in all, this is a great dairy alternative to use in your gluten free baking. Both the Original and Vanilla Flavors are Low Fat, Lactose Free, Cholesterol Free, Caseinate Free, and Gluten Free. Comes in 1 lb 5.4 oz size and will make up to 8 quarts of milk. The Better Than Milk also comes in Soy Flavor. I have not tried that as my daughter and I are soy free.
