Gluten Free French Fried Onions

French Fried Onions are famous for being added to the top of the famous Green Bean Casserole. Often Thanksgiving and Christmas time is the only time we here about this delicious topping. The good news is that we can actually enjoy these delicious fried onions all year round. Try them as a topping on salads, casseroles, saute’d vegetables, and Mama’s favorite as a topping on hamburgers and of course the famous green bean casserole.

Mama’s Gluten Free French Fried Onions are super easy to make. They can be made using any milk, dairy or dairy free. They stay fresh on in a sealed airtight container for up to two weeks. However, if your family is anything like mine, they won’t make it to day 2. I find myself constantly fighting off kids and my husband as they sneak them from the plate, insisting they are only having a taste, haha. If I don’t we won’t have any by the time dinner is ready. I recommend making a double batch and then hopefully, you can enjoy them again during the week. Enjoy!

Gluten Free French Fried Onions

Ingredients

1-2 large onions (sweet or yellow)
1 cup milk (dairy, rice, nut, soy)
1 egg for 1 onion, 2 eggs for 2 onions
*** You can make these egg free, just be very gentle when separating with a fork, and the crust won’t be as thick.
2 cups Mama’s Almond or Coconut Blend Flour
¼ tsp. salt
½ tsp. garlic powder
⅛-¼tsp. ground pepper
salt, to taste (sprinkle over fried onions after frying)
oil for frying (canola, vegetable, safflower, coconut)

Directions

Slice onions into thin strips or rings into about 1/4 inch thick slices. In a small bowl whisk together egg and milk. Soak onion slices, about a large handful at a time, in milk mixture for 1-2 minutes.

In a ziploc bag, combine flour, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Take some onions out of milk and egg mixture, allowing excess liquid to drip off, and place in bag. Seal the bag and shake to coat onions. (You can also put flour into a bowl and coat the onions in the bowl of flour, but the bag makes it less messy and quicker.)

Fry in deep fat fryer at 375 degrees for 3-4 minutes or until onions begin to become golden brown. Lightly separate onions a few times during frying to keep from them from sticking together. Depending on fryer and heat of oil will determine frying time. Check frequently and when they begin to become golden brown they are done.

Transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel to soak up extra grease. Lightly sprinkle with salt to taste. Repeat with remaining onions.

GFM Tip If you don’t have a deep fat fryer, fill medium sized saucepan with about 2 inches of oil. Heat oil over medium-high heat until hot. Test the oil to see if it is hot enough by dropping one onion in the oil. If the oil sizzles or bubbles, it is ready. Reduce heat to about medium. Fry onions about 1 handful at a time until they become golden brown. Separate onions with a fork a few times to keep the onions from sticking together. Repeat.
